US and EU rule on airplane liquids
The ban on carrying cosmetics and toiletries on commercial flights has been lifted by US Airport Authorities. Passengers will now be able to carry cosmetics in a clear, sealable bag and in containers of less than 100ml.
The European Commission is also developing EU-wide security rules that would allow passengers to bring small amounts of liquid cosmetics and perfumes onto aeroplanes. The rules came in reponse to the tough national bans introduced after the scare.
EU transport commissioner Jacques Barrot said common European regulations should permit the varying on liquids such as small shampoo bottles and scent. Brussels may issue formal proposals after a planned meeting with EU air industry experts in late September. Barrot said he was seeking a “good balance” between security concerns and passenger convenience.
