Superdrug announces major expansion plans

Superdrug has unveiled major new expansion plans. Over the next three years the high street chain will open 100 new stores across the UK, with a focus on London and the South East.

“While our online offering continues to grow, our high street presence is still of huge importance and we are looking forward to growing the portfolio,” Nigel Duxbury, AS Watson UK Property Director, explained.

The announcement comes after Superdrug launched two new store formats last year. Beauty Studio stores combine premium beauty products with services including in-store salons, blow dry bars and nail bars, while Health and Wellbeing stores focus on health for the modern customer.

Elements of both of these stores are currently being rolled out across existing stores alongside the new expansion plans. By the time the plans are complete, Superdrug will have more than 900 stores in total in a range of formats.

Duxbury explained: “We are currently seeking sites nationwide, with a particular focus within London and the South East, but ultimately the emphasis will be where our customers wish to shop. Our segmented store approach allows us to offer a Superdrug store to satisfy our customer needs whether they are shopping ‘on the go’, traveling to and from work, weekly shopping in local towns or shopping centres, or indeed leisure shopping in larger and more premier shopping destinations and out of town locations.”

The high street chain is already in various negotiations to secure additional sites accommodating retail footprints from 2,000sqft to 5,000sqft dependent on store location and category.
