Arden predicts sales dive after a poor holiday season
Elizabeth Arden Inc today announced its preliminary results for the fiscal quarter ended 31 December 2008, reporting a 12.5% to 13.5% decrease in net sales. The company, which expects to see net sales in the region of $365m to $370m, has pointed the finger of blame at today’s “challenging” retail environment. Elizabeth Arden’s chairman, E Scott Beattie, singled out the company’s US Elizabeth Arden prestige department stores business as being particularly badly affected.

However, according to Beattie, Elizabeth Arden’s North American fragrance business experienced sales that were “consistent” with its outlook for the holiday season. This was due to the success of fragrances such as the recently launched Viva la Juicy, which was the US’s number one fragrance in autumn 2008.
