in-cosmetics 2015 saw a wealth of skin care active ingredient launches targeting a variety of issues; the following address the Asian-inspired trends for protection from external aggressors and a brighter, more uniform skin tone.
Why all the stress?
With the trend for skin care with 'protection' claims stretching beyond UV filters (such as Clarins' UV Plus Anti-Pollution Day Screen) continuing to gain traction outside of Asia, the number of ingredients claiming to minimise the impact of external aggressors on the skin is also on the up.
Exposure to air pollution results in accumulative damage to DNA and to chronic inflammation, both of which lead to premature signs of ageing.
“A really strong trend in the marketplace is for anti-pollution – it's been described as the next SPF,” said Linda Foltis, VP of R&D, Care Specialties, Ashland Specialty Ingredients, while Liki von Oppen-Bezalel, VP Business Development and Marketing at IBR, noted: “In China, at the moment, people are really concerned about air pollution and the damage it causes to skin. But the need for solutions to skin ageing due to pollution has been there for a long time.”
