Bioplastics can contribute to EU goals
However ‘stronger support’ is needed to implement their use
The use of bioplastics can play a significant role in Europe’s bio-economy and they should receive stronger support by European policy makers, commented Lambert van Nistelrooij MEP, who was chairing the conference ‘Plastics and the bio-economy – the evolution of plastics’, which was held last week in Brussels.
The conference, which took place from 21-22 September, was organised in association with the European Bioplastics association and played host to over 100 delegates.
Mr van Nistelrooij was keen to emphasise the benefits of using bioplastics which included the advantage of using renewable resources over fossil ones and the fact that GHG emissions are reduced which are significant steps towards Europe’s transition towards a bio-based economy.
In his opening address to delegates, Mr van Nistelrooij commented: “Bioplastics offer great opportunities for smart and sustainable growth in the EU. There are already numerous proposals for supportive measures with regard to bioplastics and it is vital that EU policy focuses on implementing them in the short to mid term.”
