What happens when a cosmetic ingredient supplier has 1,000 kilograms of an ingredient it no longer needs? Or when a formulator needs only a fraction of a supplier's minimum order quantity?
CM Studio+ is introducing a solution: the CM Studio+ SwapBoard, a free online platform where registered CM Studio+ users can list surplus cosmetic ingredients and connect with other companies interested in acquiring them.
The SwapBoard is designed to facilitate connections involving a wide range of personal care raw materials, including surfactants, preservatives, actives, extracts, fragrance oils, colorants and other functional ingredients.
People in this industry are already swapping ingredients. Someone has an ingredient they don’t need, someone else is looking for that ingredient, and they connect. We’re simply creating a centralised place where those opportunities can happen.
Said Boris Zion, co-founder of CM Studio+.
The SwapBoard also addresses a common challenge in cosmetics manufacturing: minimum order quantities (MOQs). A supplier may require a company to purchase 2,000 kilograms of an ingredient when the company needs considerably less. Through the SwapBoard, multiple companies can potentially connect and coordinate purchases that make a large MOQ more manageable.
For example, if someone needs 2,000 kilograms but three companies each need a portion of that amount, the SwapBoard can help those companies find each other. It’s about solving a very practical problem.
Zion explained.

Turning surplus into opportunity
Excess inventory can create significant headaches for companies. Ingredients can occupy valuable warehouse space, approach expiration dates or ultimately must be discarded.
“I have hundreds of ingredients myself that I could list,” Zion said. “There are companies sitting on ingredients they want to get rid of, and there are companies looking for those same ingredients. Why throw something away if another company can use it?”
The SwapBoard is intended to make those connections faster, particularly in an industry where ingredient requirements can change quickly.
CM Studio+ does not act as a broker or intermediary in transactions. Users communicate directly with one another and take negotiations, transactions and logistics off the platform.
“We are only the facilitator,” Zion said. “No transactions take place on the platform. Users take the conversation and negotiations offline.”

CM Studio+ SwapBoard — A global ingredient exchange
The CMS+ SwapBoard is for companies looking to reduce surplus inventory, find hard-to-source materials or work around large MOQs in the cosmetics industry—and it is completely free. The SwapBoard is being developed as an international resource, with participation open to CM Studio+ users around the world. Zion expects the platform’s usefulness to grow as more formulators, contract manufacturers and raw material companies participate.
The SwapBoard is live at www.cmstudioplus.com.
“Ultimately, this only works if people use it,” Zion said. “The more ingredients that are listed in real time, the more useful it becomes. Someone may have something sitting in a warehouse that another company needs right now.”
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
- What can I do with excess cosmetic ingredients before they expire?
If the ingredients are still within their usable shelf life, companies can look for other manufacturers, formulators or suppliers that may be able to use them. The CM Studio+ SwapBoard provides a place to list those materials and connect directly with potential buyers.
- Where can I sell surplus cosmetic raw materials?
Companies traditionally rely on their industry contacts, distributors or direct outreach to find a home for excess ingredients. The SwapBoard creates another option by putting surplus materials in front of other CM Studio+ users who may be looking for them.
- What information should I provide when listing excess ingredients?
The more information a potential buyer has, the easier it is to determine whether an ingredient is suitable. Listings can include the ingredient name, quantity available, manufacturer, lot information, shelf life or expiration date, and other relevant specifications.
- Can I sell ingredients that are close to their expiration date?
Potentially, provided the material is still within its usable shelf life and the relevant information is disclosed to the prospective buyer. Companies should clearly communicate dates, storage conditions and applicable documentation so buyers can make informed decisions.
- What if I need less than a supplier's minimum order quantity?
The SwapBoard can help companies with similar requirements find one another. For example, if a supplier has a 2,000-kilogram MOQ but several companies each need only a portion, those companies may be able to connect and discuss how to divide the requirement.
For companies looking to reduce surplus inventory, find hard-to-source materials or work around large MOQs, the SwapBoard offers a new way to connect directly with potential partners.
