DuPont crowns Van Cleef & Arpels king of bling

For its new Oriens fragrance, Inter Parfums’ Van Cleef & Arpels features a cap made from DuPont Surlyn and modelled on a ring from the company’s own jewellery collection. The faceted cap – designed by Joël Desgrippes at BrandImage and moulded by Lisi Cosmetics – features three different coloured lacquers on the surface of the DuPont material as well as a metallic insert set deep in the thick moulded cap, which creates the illusion of depth and mimics the pink-orange-green spectrum of a tourmaline gem.

According to DuPont, Surlyn was selected because of its high compatibility with the fragrance ingredients and because it afforded the possibility of integrating a small injection gate that was easily hidden behind one of the leaves in the cap’s design.

BrandImage has picked up the Pentawards 2010 Platinum Luxury Award for Oriens.

At Luxe Pack 2010, DuPont promoted new effects using Surlyn including caps and jars with a marble-like appearance – created through the inclusion of a different coloured nylon 6 in the resin – and textured, moulded packaging elements that can be made to feel like leather or wood.

Also new for Luxe Pack 2010 was DuPont’s Selar PA 3426R and Selar PA 7003 resins. These may be used to package cosmetics that require containers with high barrier performance in terms of water vapour, oxygen and carbon dioxide. Selar PA 7003 also allows the manufacturer to reduce wall thickness and cut production costs.
