EU Scientific Committee warns about use of nano UV filter
ETH 50 in sprays under scrutiny over inhalation
The EU’s scientific committee on consumer safety has warned against the use of nanoparticle UV filter ΕΤΗ 50 in sunscreen sprays because of the unknown risk of inhaling such small substances.
It said “additional information on safety after repeated inhalation is provided” before a reliable recommendation can be issued. It suggested that using ETH 50 sunscreens as a cream can be considered safe, however this assessment was based on studies used for non-nanomaterials.
So this advice is not “a blue-print for future”, said the committee, given the likely developments in methodology and risk assessment [for] nano-specific testing requirements”, which could lead to the need for “additional/different data”.
