Spending in Germany on body care products rose by 1.7% to €12.8bn through 2009 with per capita spending up from €153.7 to €156.6, according to the body care, cosmetics and washing and cleaning products sector organisation IKW. The figures put Germany in the middle of European care product markets.

The largest segment was hair care with spending of €3.05bn while the skin care products sector rose 1.6% to €2.9bn. Sun protection creams have not been posting growth for two years though the industry made an effort to underline the importance of skin protection with a special one-day event last June directed at consumers, sport organisations and doctors. The decorative cosmetics sector expanded in 2009 by 7.8% to €1.4bn but growth in spending on dental and oral care products was only 0.8% at €1.3bn. Women's scents and perfumes generally accounted for spending of €885m but only the care creams segment posted marked growth, rising by over 10%. Deodorants were up 1.2% at €689m and shower and bath products rose by 1.1% to €849m.
