How choosing the right partner brings solid evidence into claim support
Cosmetic claims must not be misleading but have to be supported by solid evidence. Solid evidence is based on statistically significant results that can only be achieved when certain conditions are met during the study conduct. Being aware of those key factors is the first step to successful partnering and claim substantiation.
Once the desired claim of the product is defined, the process of substantiation should be initiated by choosing or creating the design most likely to deliver the required results. A cosmetic manufacturer should be looking for an independent provider with an appropriate number of standard methods established and/or – assuming that one is looking for more than standard – offers the customization of existing study designs as part of its consultancy services.
Standard instruments are a must have but more importantly it is essential to select a provider who has invested in the latest technology. Ask for a list of available instruments to compare potential research partners.
The ability to manage even challenging recruitment conditions while ensuring compliance of the volunteers and with that the flexibility to conduct a study even at short notice is a third essential factor in CRO-selection. Location of the study site, public transport connection and the available panels are indicators for the recruitment performance.
Customization potential, equipment and recruitment performance – the evaluation of these factors should considerably narrow the number of potential providers. What comes is "fine tuning". Ask for relevant experience, existing quality guidelines and certifications and – last but not least – for a quote.
As a decision for a CRO should also consider an emotional component it is definitely worth to visit the facility and get to know the people one would be working with. The visit will either be a trust building measure or it will leave one with doubts with regard to the CROs capabilities. No matter what: it will be beneficial for the decision making process.
