As the global cosmetics industry begins phasing out the testing of cosmetics on animals, manufacturers need to find alternative methods of ensuring ingredient safety. As part of in-cosmetics’ extensive Educational Programme, two half-day Workshops will focus on the next step for the industry regarding the matter, as well as current alternatives to animal testing.

The Animal Testing Ban – What’s Next? Part 1 – 1 April, 09:00-12:30

The first of the two part series will examine alternatives to animal testing including the latest in-vitro, in-silico and in-chemico methods and how all three are essential for assessing ingredient safety.

It will also explore how international organisations play a role in the move towards alternatives and how the European industry was affected in the aftermath of the implementation date of the ban.

Speakers will include Dr. Annelie Struessmann (CONUSBAT), Dr. Christian Pellevoisin (SkinEthic Academy), Dr. Joop de Knecht (OECD) and Desmond Cave from BioReliance.

The Animal Testing Ban – What’s Next? Part 2 – 1 April, 13:30-17:30

In part two, attendees can gain insights into multi-tier alternative strategies for skin sensitisation testing. Speakers will explore the biochemical mechanisms behind the effect, how these are addressed by alternative methods and educate attendees on how information is put together like mosaic pieces for sensitisation assessment.

Part two will also look at the limitations of existing methods and those replacing animal testing and how they relate to biochemical mechanisms. Attendees will also learn about the consequences of the animal testing ban for new product development.

Sure to be a cause of some debate at the show, the talk will also make comparisons between the results of new methods of cosmetics testing and the results of animal testing.

Experts contributing to this workshop include Dr. Annelie Struessmann (CONUSBAT), Dr. Nava Dayan (Dr. Nava Dayan LLC), Dr. Reinhard Kreiling (Clariant), Ellen Pfrommer (BASF and EFFCI) and Dr. Theresa Callaghan (Callaghan Consulting).

This year’s programme boasts a total of nine workshops, more than at any previous in-cosmetics event. For the first time ever, in-cosmetics will also be hosting a pre-show workshop on Recent Perspectives in Nanotechnology in cooperation with the IFSCC.

Other topics set for discussion during the show include paraben-free preservative systems, sustainable claim substantiation, rethinking anti-ageing, developments in the lucrative haircare market and how to break in to the Brazilian and Chinese personal care market.
