Taking a pre- or probiotic supplement, or opting for a fermented drink, is not uncommon these days.

Our increased understanding of the gut microbiome in recent years has already piqued consumer interest in gut health and fed into the wellness boom, but now, researchers are turning their attention to the nasal microbiome.

Studies into the bacteria in the nose are taking place across the globe, seeking to understand its connection to the brain, health and emotions.

The nascent idea of the nose-brain axis was explored at the International Fragrance Association’s (IFRA) UK annual Fragrance Forum, held on 16 October at the Royal Institution, in London, UK.

Centered on the theme, ‘The nose’s hidden secrets’, researchers highlighted the latest developments in our understanding of the topic

“The increased scientific and consumer interest in our gut microbiome, and its impact on our overall health and wellbeing, got us thinking about the impact of our nasal microbiome when we were planning this year’s IFRA Fragrance Forum,” said Lisa Hipgrave, Director of IFRA UK.
