New film increases awareness of hair problems

Society’s attitudes towards black hair and hair loss addressed

A new film which explores the controversy and societal attitudes towards black hair is hoped to open up the debate surrounding hair types and hair conditions. Good Hair, written by Chris Rock will look at a variety of hair problems and rituals such as thinning hair and the trade in real hair for extensions.

“The Good Hair film is an incredible insight not only into the societal attitudes toward black hair, which was in vogue in the 1960s and is which has now become widely unfashionable, but also the wider reach the film has in terms of the perceptions and coping strategies different people and cultures use to avoid the stigma of ‘bad hair’,” commented trichologist Iain Sallis.

Sallis says people are often unaware of how common hair problems are, with diffuse hair loss in women affecting one in three at some point in their life.

“The public need to know they can go to a salon, get a fantastic haircut, but also an open forum to gain some understanding of their hair health,” he added.
