Novel ingredients recognised during Barcelona event

Induchem, Dow Corning and Sederma took to the prize-winner's podium at 2015's in-cosmetics trade event in Barcelona last night. The in-cosmetics Innovation Zone Best Ingredient Awards are given to honour the development of novel actives or functional ingredients combining innovative science with beneficial product features, and were awarded on 14 April at the close of the first day of the show.

This year, for the first time, the awards were split into two categories: for active and functional ingredients. In the former category, the Gold Award was presented to Induchem for Brightenyl, a skin brightening ingredient which not only works on multiple levels, but which is the very first cosmetic ingredient activated by the microbial layer human skin. Silver went to Lucas Meyer's SWT-7 (designed to increase epidermal thickness) while Codif took Bronze for Neuroguard, an anti-wrinkle agent for the 60-plus age category.

The functional ingredients category was won by Dow Corning, which was recognised for Dow Corning 3901 Liquid Satin Blend, a thick, stretchy fluid that creates a long lasting feel of intense lubricity, said to be ideal when formulating for millennials.

Lucas Meyer again took Silver for its Lecigel emulsifiers containing phospholipids, called 'Happiness in a Jar!' and Bronze went to Tagra Biotechnology for its encapsulated organic and inorganic UV filters, Suncaps.

To mark the in-cosmetics event's 25th anniversary, a one-time award was presented to the supplier of an ingredient deemed to have had the greatest impact on the personal care market in the last quarter-century, as voted for by over 1,000 show visitors and a panel of industry experts. This was scooped by Sederma for its 2000 collagen synthesis-booster Matrixyl, a five amino acids chain linked to a 16-carbon chain for improved bioavailability to the skin, which has gained a positive reputation among brands and end consumers alike.

In addition, the Gold Award in the Green Ingredient Awards, presented in association with Organic Monitor, went to Laboratoires Expanscience for Aqualicia, a three-in-one active that entraps and distributes water, and limits water loss, while concepts from Azelis, Silab and Symrise were all honoured in the Beiersdorf Innovation Pitch Award.
