The future of wet wipes has been called into question given the environmental implications the single-use non-biodegradable products have on the planet

Lush has revealed a new reusable and biodegradable facial cleanser and make-up remover.

Developed by inventor Gary Shears and co-founder of Lush, Helen Ambrosen, the 7 To 3 product (£2 each) is a circular, self-preserving skin facial pad and in keeping with Lush’s ‘naked’ ethos and is packaging free.

Formulated from fresh dove orchid fusion, ground cannelloni beans and vegan glycerine, is said to exfoliate, moisturise and nourish skin.

Meanwhile, ylang ylang tones and provides a calming scent.

Commenting on the development Shears said: “Carrageenan is the basis of the pad and we chose cannellini beans as we wanted something white but needed a gentle particle size.

“The cannellini beans are a nice gentle material. We’re buying them whole and milling them ourselves.”

Make-up removing wet wipes have come under fire for the damaging effects they to have on the environment, due to their single-use, non-biodegradable plastic.

Last year, 5,453 wet wipes were recovered from 116sqm of the river Thames, London, according to the BBC.

To use the new product customers should add warm water and gently rub onto skin before rinsing clean.

“Unlike wet wipes, or face wipes where there is a plastic wrapper and wipes that won’t biodegrade, 7 To 3 is a huge step forward and really great for the skin as well,” added Ambrosen.

The products can now be purchased from lush.com.
