Reports of consumer cosmetics complaints up by 300%

New research highlights how health related cosmetics complaints to the FDA is at an all time high

The pressure on the FDA to up surveillance on the cosmetics industry is accelerating, as a recent US study revealed that health complaints associated with personal care products surged by more than 100% last year.

According to research published by the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, the number of FDA complaints increased by 125% to 1,591 year-on-year in 2016 and by 300% from 2004, largely driven by hair care products.

Overall from 2004-2016, the FDA received 5,144 consumer complaints about cosmetics.

Hair-raising complaints

The data for the study was gleaned from the FDA's Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition’s Adverse Event Reporting System (CFSAN), a complaints database made publicly available in 2016.

It includes voluntary reports of side effects submitted by consumers and health care professionals.
