The pressure on the FDA to up surveillance on the cosmetics industry is accelerating, as a recent US study revealed that health complaints associated with personal care products surged by more than 100% last year.
According to research published by the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, the number of FDA complaints increased by 125% to 1,591 year-on-year in 2016 and by 300% from 2004, largely driven by hair care products.
Overall from 2004-2016, the FDA received 5,144 consumer complaints about cosmetics.

The data for the study was gleaned from the FDA's Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition’s Adverse Event Reporting System (CFSAN), a complaints database made publicly available in 2016.
It includes voluntary reports of side effects submitted by consumers and health care professionals.
