Number of EU personal care product safety alerts falls in 2010

But nail polish still a problem area

The number of personal care products reported last year through the EU’s RAPEX consumer alert service as being potentially unsafe or breaching the EU cosmetics directive fell in 2010 – to 66, down from 86 in 2009. The proportion of total notifications made by personal care products also fell – from 5% in 2009 to 3% last year.

In recent notifications, there have been two sales withdrawals of nail polish products in the Czech Republic: of US-made ‘Art Club’ nail lacquer; and ZHIYL brand nail polish – whose provenance is unknown. In both cases they broke the EU cosmetics directive through dibutylphthalate (DBP) content.
