Concerns about nuclear radiation are cited as a reason why sales of Japanese cosmetics in Korea are falling. The worries are an aftermath of the Fukushima nuclear disaster in March 2011, when three nuclear reactors melted down following a devastating earthquake and tsunami. Radioactivity is still being released into the environment and proving difficult to contain. This was the world’s largest nuclear incident since Chernobyl in 1986 and has affected many Korean imports from Japan.
