Aqualance contains an osmotic molecule to mimic estuary flora, particularly the microalgae Platymonas subcordiformis. Sederma's in vitro studies have found that Aqualance improves the skin water holding capacity and provides the cells with a strong resistance to desiccation and both hypo- and hypertonic shocks. By providing osmoprotection, it is also said to help keratinocytes to resist against UV induced apoptosis. According to Sederma, it is possible to increase the water level to more than 30% in the upper layers of the skin to 13% deeper in the skin after 24 hours.
