Spanish perfumer Alberto Morillas cut a refined figure in his two-piece business suit as he entered the virtual interview with Cosmetics Business, looking every part the master perfumer his 56-year fragrance career would assume.

And after a brief moment to express a shared appreciation of espresso, the master perfumer at Swiss fragrance and flavour firm DSM-Firmenich spared no time in speaking to the major shift occurring in luxury fragrance – the move towards neo‑woody scents.

Neo-wood marks a modern evolution of classic woody fragrances, such as sandalwood and cedarwood, blending those traditional, grounding earthy bases with fresh and lighter notes ranging from citrus to aromatic herbs.

This is the key scent profile contained within Chiffre Royal, the latest fragrance Morillas has created for his perfume brand Mizensir – built around refined woods and softened with oud.

Ingredients include oud assafi, patchouli, cypriol, moss, sandalwood and incense, which combine to create a “new code of expensive smelling” perfume scent that Morillas says feels “understated and wears like quiet confidence”.

Cosmetics Business sat down with Morillas to find out more about the new trend set to take over luxury fragrance, and how it also signals a new chapter for Mizensir's fragrance portfolio.
