Consumers driven by an appetite for science-led skin care are set to drive US€4bn of sales growth over the next five years, according to a new report.

Eight distinct segments of skin care consumers were identified by L.E.K Consulting in its report, Uncovering Growth Opportunities in Skincare through Behavioral Segmentation.

Clinical Seekers, Skin Care Hackers and Effortless Quality Enthusiasts indicate the growing desire for clinical proof and high-level efficacy among skin care consumers.

So-called Clinical Seekers are consumers who “pursue clinical-grade efficacy, research products deeply, and follow expert advice”.

For this group, “performance drives everything” from multi-step routines to service-based care, found the research firm – based on insights from more than 3,500 consumers across the US, UK and France.

The consultancy found that Clinical Seekers are the highest spenders and the most educated, who are “loyal to science over sentiment”.
