Treaclemoon hopes to 'disrupt the market' with new packaging

Made from medium-density polyethylene, the brand worked with RPC M&H Plastics to create the new design

UK-based bath and body brand Treaclemoon has announced the re-design of its hand and body lotion product’s packaging.

In partnership with RPC M&H Plastic the new packaging is made from medium-density polyethylene (MDPE) material, which the brand hopes will ‘disrupt the market’.

Treaclemoon said working with M&H on the custom mould was a very good experience; the designs, ideas, interpretation of the brief and the assistance M&H provided could not be faulted.

MDPE thermoplastic, defined by a density range of 0.926-0.940 g/cm3, is less dense than the more commonly used high-density polyethylene (HDPE), a polyethylene thermoplastic made from petroleum.

The material is also more robust than HPDE, with a better shock and drop resistance, and can be produced by chromium or silica catalysts, Ziegler-Natta or metallocene catalysts.

Typically it is used in gas pipes, carrier bags and packaging film.

Treaclemoon also opted for a bottle instead of a traditional tube for hand cream, which it also hopes will help it stand out against its competitors.

The colour of each new packaging reflects the main ingredient of the product, including melon, cherry, gradpefruit, marshmallow, raspberry and coconut.

Thermoplastic properties

A useful attribute of a thermoplastic is its ability to be heated to their melting point, cooled and reheated again without any notable signs of degradation.

Polyethylene models are also widely recycled, in contrast to its thermoset counterpart, which can only be heated once before setting and causing a chemical change that cannot be reversed.

Without any toxic properties, polyethylene is an ideal property to be used in the personal care industry, even though it is generally more expensive than polypropylene, and has a number of variants to be used across a number of other industries.
