When it comes to making sustainable choices as a beauty brand, choosing the right material for product packaging can be one of the most crucial decisions.

The industry produces 120 billion units of packaging every year, according to recycling company TerraCycle, with much of it destined for incineration or landfill. At the same time, there is a daunting amount of eco-friendly options out there, ranging from FSC-certified products to recycled and/or recyclable ones, each coming with their own pros and cons when it comes to circularity or biodegradability.

But amid a mushroom craze which has blossomed in 2023, could mycelium, the root-like structure of fungi, be one of the keys to solving the beauty industry’s packaging waste problem?
