eBay UK is launching a campaign to persuade C&T companies to work alongside it to tackle the issue of counterfeit products online. The campaign, Fighting Fakes With eBay, will encourage rights owners to join the online auction house’s Verified Rights Owner (VeRO) programme and use their expertise to ensure that potentially fake items are removed before consumers can purchase them.

“We invest millions of dollars annually to prevent potential counterfeits from appearing, and millions more removing from our sites the few that slip through,” commented the senior vp of eBay Europe, Doug McCallum, on the scheme. “Clearly, as we do not have the expertise to assess the authenticity of every branded product, we are unable to tackle the problem alone.

“The fight against counterfeits requires a coordinated and global approach – with governments, rights owners, law enforcement and industry working together to combat the issue. We hope this latest anti-counterfeit initiative will raise awareness and put the VeRO programme and the support it offers at the front of rights owners’ minds.”

eBay has a history of legal conflict with C&T companies L’Oréal and LVMH over the alleged sale of fake beauty products; only last week a French court ruled in favour of eBay in a case brought against it by L’Oréal.
