Neal’s Yard Remedies is celebrating its 45th anniversary and marking the occasion by investing in a larger UK store footprint, breaking into fragrance with mood-boosting perfumes, and doubling down on its hero ranges like Wild Rosehip.
The heritage brand, founded in London, UK, in 1981, has grown from a small modern apothecary selling herbal remedies into a successful natural British cosmetics chain that has survived recessions, the Covid-19 pandemic and more.
In a bid to maintain its relevance as a legacy player, Neal’s Yard Remedies has launched three new UK stores this year – two in London and one in Manchester – to enhance its “experiential beauty” offering for loyal customers, while also hoping to win over younger generations.
“45 years is a pretty huge milestone for us, and I feel super proud, especially when you think when we started we were just a little apothecary in a dusty corner of Neal's Yard [in Covent Garden],” says Anabel Kindersley, CEO and Co-Owner of Neal’s Yard Remedies, and a previous Pure Beauty Awards judge.
“At a point when retail is in a difficult place in terms of the [UK] high street – you can see so many shops shuttered – we have done the reverse, opening three stores in just a few months.
“It is quite a bold move. These [stores] are very modern, but honour our apothecary roots, acting as a thoughtful homage to care and calmness – sanctuaries in their own right.
“This was important for us because we wanted to bring people together, which is the embodiment of our brand, reconnecting them with nature and delivering that experiential touch point.”

The new Neal’s Yard Remedies stores have opened in Manchester's Arndale shopping centre, Spitalfields in London, and popular London shopping destination, Westfield White City.
They provide a sensorial retail environment where consumers can discover personalised wellbeing advice under the brand’s ‘Store of the Future’ concept, comprising dedicated consultation areas, apothecary-style aromatherapy walls and a preserved oak tree which embodies the brand’s logo.
Neal’s Yard Remedies has 21 standalone stores in the UK, but is also available in more than 180 retail locations in England.
Expanding Neal Yard’s Remedies physical store footprint in the UK especially makes sense when you look at the financials, as Kindersley states the brand’s stores perform pretty much “neck-on-neck” with its e-commerce platform.
“Plus, we have got these other channels, which are really fast-growing – up 30% on last year. For example, [ecommerce giant] Amazon is really big for us.”
Neal’s Yard Remedies also expanded its hero franchise Wild Rosehip in May with the addition of Wild Rosehip Glow Cleansing Oil and Wild Rosehip Glow Cream.
