The cosmetics brand hopes the star of HBO's Insecure will inspire customers with her "outspoken but relatable" image

Issa Rae, the US actress, writer and producer, has joined CoverGirl as its latest brand ambassador.

Best known for her role in HBO's comedy-drama Insecure, based on her web series Awkward Black Girl, Rae is said to “embody the CoverGirl spirit” of self-expression with her outspoken but relatable image and unique observations on life and culture, according to the Coty-owned cosmetics brand.

Rae said: “My character is ever-evolving, and make-up is a tool to help transform my persona – whether for a role I play in content that I produce, or the different roles I take on in my life.

“Becoming a CoverGirl means a lot because the brand recognizes just how important it is for people to embrace their individuality and express themselves in unique and diverse ways.

“This has been a major part of my personal journey, and a message that I want to share with others.”

Rae joins the brand's other celebrity ambassadors, including Zendaya, Katy Perry and Sofia Vergara, and will appear in future advertising campaigns.
