Popcorn meets fragrance at Etat Libre D’Orange

Niche French fragrance brand État Libre D’Orange has launched a special edition perfume, named La Fin du Monde (€69 for 50ml, €119 for 100ml).

Created by perfumer Quentin Bisch, who was featured as a Givaudan trainee in the 2011 documentary Perfume by Ian Denyer, it features notes of popcorn accord, carrot seeds, cumin seeds, sesame, black pepper from Madagascar, freesia, vetiver from Haiti, sandalwood, kernels of ambrette absolute, orris absolute, styrax, and canon powder accord.

The fragrance, packaged in a pale orange colourway, is marketed with Etat Libre’s usual tongue-in-cheek approach. The bottle and outer packaging feature the international symbol for radiation and a mushroom cloud, while the advertising uses phrases such as “This Way to the Apocalypse”, “Countdown to Eternity”, and “There Will be Survivors”.

The perfume is currently publicised by a taster film on YouTube named Popcorn Apocalypse, which asks: “We know how the end of the world will look, but how will it smell?” The fragrance was inspired by the work of Blaise Cendrars, a Swiss born modernist novelist who lived in France.
