Founded in 1986 by Wilfried Courage and Gabriel Khazaka, the company introduced the world’s first devices capable of objectively measuring skin parameters. Since then, C+K has established itself as the global market leader in skin analysis technology.
For four decades, the company has been developing technologies that set standards: from easy-to-use probe measurements to sophisticated imaging systems that precisely assess parameters such as skin hydration and sebum content, elasticity, barrier function, and microstructure. More than 50 employees from 18 nations bring scientific innovation “Made in Germany” into practical application worldwide – in over 70 countries. The C+K Technology Centre, opened in 2020, consolidates in-house development and drives the next generation of measurement methods.
With several thousand publications, C+K devices are considered the gold standard in research and development. Cosmetic and pharmaceutical manufacturers, universities, testing institutes, as well as leading institutions in dermatology, pharmacy, and occupational medicine rely on these measurement systems. They are also used in veterinary medicine, sports science, nutrition, textile science, forensics, and archaeology. In addition, C+K is an established partner in national and international research projects with universities and industry and is actively engaged in scientific exchange.
C+K measurement systems are deployed in locations that once seemed inaccessible to skin research: from space studies on the ISS and Antarctic expeditions to research conducted at extreme altitudes of 4,800 m in La Paz, Bolivia. In sub-zero temperatures, in a vacuum, or under thin atmospheric conditions, they deliver precise data on the effects of extreme environmental influences on the human body, generating insights that contribute to research and product development worldwide.
The devices also demonstrate their relevance in everyday practice: in pharmacies, cosmetic institutes, and at the point of sale, they support professionals in understanding their customers’ skin and guiding them through the vast array of products with individualised recommendations for treatments and skincare solutions.
After 40 years, the company’s focus remains firmly on the future: with new developments, digitalised measurement concepts, and a strong international partner network, Courage + Khazaka continues to advance scientific skin analysis. Together with its long-standing global distribution partners, the company maintains a presence at international trade fairs and scientific congresses, continuously strengthening its global market position. Current investments are directed toward the development of systems for in-vitro measurements and the determination of sun protection factors for sunscreen products.
“40 years of Courage + Khazaka means 40 years of passion for measurable skin research,” says the management team. “From the very beginning, our goal has been to build a bridge between science and practice while never losing sight of the users. We have consistently developed this vision further.” In 2009, Gabriel Khazaka was honoured for his pioneering work in skin research as the only non-scientist to receive the title of “Professor h.c.” from the Université Franche-Comté in Besançon.
The 82-year-old founder remains active as Managing Director of the family-owned company. For some time now, he has been supported by the next generation: his son Georg and daughter Diana stand by his side at the helm of the company, after Wilfried Courage left the business in 2008.
