A survey carried out by department store chain Debenhams has found that the average British woman’s make-up bag is four years out of date. Despite the period-after-opening indicator used on most beauty products, the survey (which involved 1000 women aged 18 to 70) found 89% of respondents were either unaware that such information existed, did not understand the ‘open pot’ symbol or were unable to read the tiny writing donating the number of months of safe use.

Moreover, 60% of those asked admitted to sharing cosmetics with friends and family, increasing the chance of infection, while 68% said they only replaced products once they had run out, regardless of how long that might take.

“We wouldn’t hesitate to chuck out mouldy or bacteria ridden food and the same standards should apply to the lotions and potions we put on our skin,” commented Sara Stern, director of cosmetics at Debenhams.
