Brussels warns alternative tests will not be ready for ban deadline
Delays on dose toxicity, reproductive toxicity and toxicokinetics
A European Commission report has warned cosmetics companies will not meet the 11 March 2013 deadline for blocking the sale of products whose ingredients have been animal tested.
Regarding the three animal tests allowed until that date – on repeated dose toxicity, reproductive toxicity and toxicokinetics – the report said: “Validated alternative methods will not be available… before the marketing ban enters into force.” It added that “serious efforts” had yielded “partial replacement methods,” but “full replacement does not seem possible yet”.
