Cosmetics will be under the scrutiny of one of the UK's most well-respected medical experts in tonight's (27 March) Horizon programme on BBC2 at 9pm. Professor Lesley Regan is out to uncover the scientific claims often made by cosmetic brands.
The edition examines the ageing process and cosmetic testing in depth and Regan is expected to be tough on the industry. The show's website alone reviews the advertising claims of Estée Lauder's Advanced Night Repair, challenging claims that the product's ingredients, which include UV protection can make you look 15 years younger. As Regan explains, if you are using the cream at night, your skin is not likely to be exposed to sunlight.
This is not the first time the industry has come under scrutiny for its product claims. L'Oreal was criticised over advertising campaigns for its Anti-Wrinkle De-Crease face cream after implying that the product had a physiological effect rather than a purely cosmetic result, and had insufficient evidence to prove that it could 'rapidly reduce wrinkles'.
