Croda is to close a manufacturing site in northeast England in 2010. The decision to close the Wilton-based site, at which 125 employees are based, follows Dow Chemical’s decision to close an adjoining facility producing ethylene oxide, a key raw material. Dow is the UK’s sole manufacturer of the material, which Croda has deemed too expensive to ship from the continent.

Croda expects to pay £13m in cash costs and around £5m write down for the closure. Production meanwhile will be moved to other sites within the group where ethylene oxide is more easily accessible. Croda will enter into consultations over jobs with the site’s employees within the next fortnight.
