US scientists warn of new phthalates health risk

There were already concerns that the chemical caused reproduction problems, but now Rochester lead researcher Dr Richard Stahlhut has concluded low-dose exposures to phthalates reduce testosterone in men, boosting obesity rates and related disorders, such as type 2 diabetes. Analysis found men with the highest levels of phthalates in their urine had more belly fat and insulin resistance than men with lower phthalates levels. “Unfortunately, there's still a lot to learn about phthalates,” said Dr Stahlhut.
