The International Organisation of Aluminium Aerosol Container Manufacturers (Aerobal) has announced the winners of its annual World Aluminium Aerosol Can Award. The awards recognise innovation and technological progress in the aluminium aerosol industry and are judged by a team of nine leading international can and packaging magazines including SPC.

The awards are divided into two categories - 'cans launched on the market' and 'prototypes', allowing greater innovation to be recognised. The winner of the 'cans launched on the market' category was Exal for the Right Guard RGX Body Spray can it produced for the Dial Corporation.

The can is said to reflect Right Guard's core principles with a masculine embossed and debossed design. Judges were particularly impressed with the shape of the upper part of the can, which provides excellent grip for the consumer and presence on shelf.

In the 'prototypes' category the top prize was unusually shared by three containers. Tubex scooped two of the coveted places with its silent and glittering cans. The silent can features a flocked bottom, muffling sound when it is put down to create a soft, silky impression according to the company. The effect would be suitable for fine fragrances and luxury goods as it conveys a premium quality. The flocked bottom also prevents the can from scratching any surfaces.

The second can to be recognised features a varnish containing a glittering effect. In order to get the effect, Tubex printed the can in black and then applied an overvarnish, which creates a decorative shimmering effect.

The third prototype award went to Nussbaum for its patented shaped barrier pressure pack. According to Nussbaum the can represents the first time this technology has been applied to a shaped cylindrical container, allowing for greater design flexibility and ease of use for the consumer.
