A new report by Datamonitor has found that people living in Britain spend more per person on fair-trade products than any other nation.

“The next step in the ethical consumer revolution” also reveals that fair trade sales across Europe, the US, Australia, New Zealand and Japan have achieved double-digit growth since 2002, with further growth predicted in the future.

Valued at £455.3m, the US has the biggest fair trade market of the regions covered by the report. Europe is lead by Britain with a total value of £395m, which corresponds to an unrivalled £6.50 per capita. France and Germany follow with £152m (£2.50 per capita) and £99m (£1.20 per capita) respectively.

“Ethical consumerism will increasingly come to the fore as people shop for products they fell akin to politically, ethically and aesthetically,” commented Nick Beevors, consumer market analyst at Datamonitor. “Consumers will choose brands that are actively making a difference in a transparent and trustworthy manner. This is reflected by the double-digit growth of 15.7% (between 2007-2012) which Datamonitor forecasts for fair-trade purchases over the next 5 years in the 11 countries covered by the report.”
