A new report from the US has found that a cream tested to treat pre-cancerous skin could have beneficial effects on sun-damage, reducing the signs of ageing.

According to a new paper by the Archives of Dermatology, the cream Fluorouracil appeared to reduce wrinkles, age spots, sallow skin and shadows when used over a significant period of time on a small number of volunteers, with researchers warning that some may seek to profit from the cosmetic effects of the cream.

The cream was found to encourage the body to produce a healthy layer of skin after it damages the epidermis on purpose. Despite allegedly giving the same effects as chemical peels and laser treatments there has already been wide spread cynicism about any potential cosmetic use due to the distressing side effects.

The Cancer Research UK charity has released a statement saying that the cream can actually cause notable side effects such as severe redness, oozing, weeping and scabbing of the skin - which may last for several weeks after the treatment has ended. It also pointed out that the small number of volunteers used in the study was not a significant enough number to fully gauge results.

However, it was said within the study that the cosmetic benefits could encourage cancer sufferers to try the drug and to undergo the rigorous treatment.
