The European Parliament’s Environment Committee has today voted on the European Commission’s review proposal of the European Cosmetics Directive, with many industry bodies coming forward to show their support.

The Cosmetics Directive 76/768/EEC dates back 30 years and has long been chastised for being an out-dated and confusing piece of legislation due to the many changes made over its life span. The new proposal aims to simplify the process and re-cast it as a single Regulation that is directly applicable in each member state, preventing unnecessary administration duties that would see each individual country having to implement the changes into national legislation.

Colipa and the CTPA have published their support for the review, which is expected to be finalised before the European elections in 2009. Bertil Heerink, Colipa director general says, “We attach high importance to an open and constructive dialogue with the European Parliament on this review process. Consumers benefit from an innovative cosmetics industry that provides high quality and safe products.”
