The International Fragrance Association (IFRA) has issued the first complete revision of its Code of Practice originally published in 1973, the same year the Association was founded. The new code is designed to reflect the current state of knowledge and today's scientific and business environment and should also make its consultation more user-friendly.

This comprehensive document is said to support IFRA's commitment to provide products that are safe for use by the consumer and safe for the environment. It covers the creation and manufacture of fragrance compositions and use of all fragrance materials for all types of applications. It contains the full set of IFRA standards, which have been revised and adapted to new knowledge. These include amendments based on new policies that IFRA felt it was important to adopt, including the new Quantitative Risk Assessment method for fragrance sensitizers, the Compliance Program, the requirements for fragrances used in children's toys and the potential skin effects of oral care products.

“We believe that this revision of the Code of Practice is another major milestones in IFRA's endeavour to strengthen and improve the safety management in the fragrance industry,” commented Jean-Pierre Houri, director general of IFRA.
