Faraday Packaging Partnership takes a slightly different approach to putting together conferences on packaging technology and innovation. It takes advantage of academic research “to gain consumer-centric insight into packaging technology and find competitive advantage through true innovation”. The core research platforms for this, Faraday Packaging Partnership's fourth annual conference on new technologies for innovative packaging are: design & engineering, consumer understanding and materials & structures, discussed by a range of internationally recognised academic speakers.
Keynote addresses include a presentation from Flemming Hansen, professor of marketing communications, Copenhagen Business School, on the role of emotions in consumer choice. He will look at contemporary neurological research that suggests that emotion may play a role in its own right, quite different from the way in which this has been considered in traditional consumer choice behaviour theory. Professor Hansen says: “Packaging and its design give rise to emotional responses and influence emotional evaluations. Designers need to consider the role of design in brand and company perception.”
Issues driven briefing sessions will include a series of presentations on indulgence in the packaging arena. Ronnier Luo, colour and polymer chemistry, University of Leeds will talk on applying colour science in product design, an industry in which the technology has not been fully explored.
Other briefing sessions will cover sustainability issues, such as sustainability modelling and biodegradable packaging, and convenience, such as openability and biomimetics. An interactive futurology workshop will focus on packaging in a digital age.
There will also be the chance to see how global brand leaders have turned packaging technology and innovation insight into commercial opportunity through industrial case studies from Faraday Packaging members Reckitt Benckiser, Crown Holdings, Diageo and Coors Brewers.
Walter Lewis, md Faraday Packaging Partnership says: “FaraPack Briefing provides a rich hotbed of ideas to deliver a new dimension in packaging. There will be an excellent mix of international delegates from academia and the commercial sector - a great opportunity to discuss potential project ideas - as well as ample time for networking and exhibition viewing.”
The black tie FaraPack students and associates awards dinner and drinks reception will be held at the Castle Museum in York on 11 October.
