The number of people undertaking cosmetic procedures such as liposuction and eyelid surgery has reached its highest figure ever, according to new figures.

The British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS) has revealed 28,921 surgical procedures were carried out by its members in 2006, up 31.2% from 22,041. The procedures were carried out in private practice.
Liposuction saw a huge growth in popularity with just under 4,000 procedures carried out in 2006, up 90% from the previous year. Similarly, eye lid surgery grew 48% to 5,065 procedures and brow lifts recorded a 50% increase to 868 operations.
Women made up the bulk of cosmetic surgery subjects; a total of 92% of all procedures were on women in 2006, with breast augmentation still the most popular operation.
Interestingly, the number of men who underwent cosmetic surgery last year also grew, with nose jobs the most popular operation. A total of 525 men opted for the procedure.
