Kao Corporation has announced plans to spend around $166.8m on the construction of an environmental laboratory in the city of Wakayama in Japan. The company's aim is to unify research functions that are currently scattered across different businesses within the corporation.

Kao, which manufactures personal care items, cleaning products and specialty chemicals, wants to focus on and accelerate the development of new technologies and eco-friendly products. Among its environmental goals are making smaller containers and switching from petroleum-based to plant-based ingredients in household products. The company also plan to cut carbon dioxide emissions by 2020 by 35% from 2005 and cut water consumption in product use by 30%.

“We’ll expand through the pursuit of both growth in the company’s size and environmental measures," said Kao Corporation’s president Motoki Ozaki.

As part of its globalisation efforts, Kao also recently announced that its logo will shift from featuring Chinese characters to English letters.
